Start with the cell whose both labels feel most obvious. If you know the row theme is animals and the column theme is colours, "RED" or "BLUE" may fill instantly — that confirmed cell then narrows every other entry in the same row and column simultaneously.
Use letter count as a hard veto. The grid fixes the length of each answer. If your best guess is one letter too long or too short, discard it immediately — the right word is somewhere in your vocabulary, just shorter or longer than you first assumed.
